  1. Shropshire is a county of the West of 
  2. England. Sometimes abbreviated to Salop, it 
  3. was officially known by this name from 1974 
  4. until local protest reversed the decision 
  5. in 1980. Its area is 3,490sq km (1,347sq 
  6. miles), towns Shrewsbury (administrative 
  7. headquarters), Telford, Oswestry, and 
  8. Ludlow. Features bisected, on the Welsh 
  9. border, North West to South East by the 
  10. river Severn.
